Spotlight on Michael Koss

By Neal Leviton, Vice President

When one speaks of having a full life, Michael Koss would most definitely be at the top of the list.  Born and raised in Southern California he and his wife Corie live in a high-rise building on Wilshire Boulevard. His office located at 12410 Santa Monica Boulevard is familiar to all of us.

Michael’s parents, Marty and Evelyn Koss, live in Century City.  His son Zane and wife Elisa live in Hermosa Beach where they operate Zane’s Restaurant. Elisa is the former Chair of the YWD of The Guardians.  Michael’s daughter Autumn and husband Jessie live in Boston.  His younger daughter Niki is attending Eugene Lang College in New York.  Then there are the three grandchildren.

Michael’s dad, Marty, owned a restaurant chain called Piece O’ Pizza and Michael spent his first year after college working there. In 1971 Michael decided to open his own restaurant called Italy’s Little Kitchen.  That business is now owned and operated by his son Zane.  Talk about keeping it in the family!

Shortly after opening his restaurant, Michael started buying a few small real estate deals.  He realized he was good at it, and started to syndicate deals.  40 years later we all know of the terrific achievements in real estate that Michael has accomplished in his career.  He owns high quality commercial projects including the Malibu Country Mart and the Laguna Lumberyard.   Around 1981 Michael decided to expand into the real estate finance business and he started Koss Financial.  In the 30 years Koss Financial was operating, they evolved into one of the industry leaders in the commercial real estate financing.

Two years ago, while on vacation with Corie, Michael had an epiphany to develop a business called Koss Resource as a high tech commercial real estate information resource company.  Koss Resource has developed the most sophisticated and comprehensive web search engine for commercial real estate loans.  Now that the website is live, it has become the premier commercial real estate financing resource site on the Internet.  Check it out at www.kossresource.com.  It is an amazing site, there is nothing like it in the real estate industry.  Koss Resource employs approximately 20 people, not counting the staff for his real estate projects.

Michael has always been philanthropic minded and heavily involved in the Jewish community. Some of his charitable accomplishments have been:

Chair, AIPAC Western Region, 1990-1991 General Chair, Jewish Federation Campaign 2000

Chair of the Board of The Jewish Federation 2006-2007

National Board, Birthright Israel Board of Trustees, at present Trustee, Brandeis University, at present Centennial Fund Endowment Co-Chair, Jewish Federation, at present. They are closing in on their goal of raising $100 million in commitments.

In addition, in 1988 Michael was President of the Apartment Association of Greater Los Angeles.

He has been a Guardians member for over 25 years and a member of the Board of Directors for over 20 years. He has always enjoyed The Guardians and has made many friends here over the years.  Michael is very pleased that Tracy Baum is our Director since they worked together at The Jewish Federation.

Michael’s mother in law recently lived at the Jewish Home and the whole family thought she received an amazing level of care.  He is forever grateful to The Guardians and to the Los Angeles Jewish Home for this.  It has been one of the reasons for his dedication to our organization, and we are all grateful for his numerous contributions to The Guardians over the years.  We all wish Michael the best of luck in his new business, Koss Resource.  To sign up for a free membership on Koss Resource, visit www.kossresource.com.  After all, his success will be The Guardians success!
